Session Length and Structure
ASLA is not timed. Offer your students breaks and end sessions when appropriate, and schedule additional sessions as needed with your ASLA local test coordinator.
Test Completion
When students say they finished a sub-test, double-check by logging back into the ASLA Proctor Portal. The site should confirm that the student has completed all subtests (tasks). If you are unsure, check with your ASLA school test coordinator.
A school test coordinator (STC) must enter students into the system before they can take the assessment. Proctors should check the student list. If the student’s name is not in the system, please contact your STC. When the student record is added, you can see them listed in the Proctor Dashboard.
A student can log out at any time by clicking the yellow door in the upper right corner of the assessment. When the student logs back in, they can resume the assessment from where they left off.
If login is successful, the student will see the assessment instructions screen. If not, these are the most common reasons:
The student is entering the wrong Username or ID / Password. Please verify the information with the student. Ensure there are no extra spaces at the beginning or end of the username or ID/password and that the username is all lowercase.
An STC has locked the assessment school-wide, which means that all students will be locked out. Please check with your STC to see if the assessment has a school-wide lock.
A proctor locked the student's assessment, which means only the specific student will be locked out, not all students. Please check the Proctor Dashboard to see if the student's assessment is locked and unlock it if necessary.
The student is trying to log in after they have completed their assessment.
The student is trying to log in before the assessment window has opened or after it has closed.
Using a browser, students will log in to https://asla.asledcenter.org/login
Make sure the browser you choose is at the latest version. We recommend using Google Chrome if you have the option
Enter the student’s username as displayed on the proctor portal, always lowercase
Password: the numeric student User ID, either 5 or 6 digits long
2. When students log into ASLA for the first time, they will view an introduction to ASLA video in ASL. After viewing it, click the arrow to proceed to the first subtest instructions.
Note: If students log out and log in again, they will see this introduction video again. They may choose to skip past it by clicking the arrow, as shown.
3. Subtest instructions include a ‘think aloud’ demonstration, modeling best practices for test-taking in ASL.
Note: if students have logged out and log in again, they will see the subtest instruction again, and may choose to skip past it. When they move on, they will land on the first incomplete question in their assessment.
4. Next, a pop-up window will indicate that the student is in the practice question section. The student will click the lower right arrow to proceed.
5. Students will then take two practice questions.
After responding to each practice question, students will receive confirmation of their correct (green) or incorrect(red) response and can try again until they answer correctly.
6. After completing two practice questions, a prompt pop-up window will appear. When ready to proceed with the actual subtest, students can click on the lower right arrow.
7. ASLA Subtest item design includes
ASL Prompt & ASL Answer Options
ASL prompts include single signs, multiple signs, instructions, and questions.
Picture Prompt & ASL Answer Options
Note: Students should select an answer if possible, but they may skip the question for now and move to the next. They will then have a chance to review and provide an answer.
8. At the end of each subtest, a review page will appear.
Students should review and provide some answer to all questions.
Unanswered questions are highlighted in dark yellow.
All questions must be answered before proceeding to the next subtest
Students can click on the blue question number to go back and answer the question.
After answering the question, students can return to the review page by clicking the yellow “review” button as shown.
Students can log out by clicking on the logout icon in the upper right corner of the assessment.
Note: when logging in to the assessment after having answered some questions already, students will arrive back where they left off. However, first they'll see the introductory video, and then the instruction video for the current subtest -- this provides a chance to clarify or review. If the student wishes to skip these videos, they may do so.
Students sometimes experience problems logging in due to mistyping their username or password. Both fields are case-sensitive. Have them try again. In the rare event that they've entered credentials correctly and still cannot get in, please contact your ASLA school test coordinator, who will ensure our support team resolves the issue.
If one or more videos in a test item won't play, start replaying the prompt video. This generally resets the whole question or lets you play each answer video manually.
Check the internet speed with a tool such as https://www.google.com/search?q=speed+test. Then, follow the instructions under the results to determine what action to take. If the computer has a weak WiFi signal, you may be able to adjust the computer or move closer to WiFi router.
The local network has a bottleneck.
Try to reload the page while holding down the SHIFT key to remove any unnecessary cache. If this doesn’t work, try:
Restart the browser and navigate to the Start screen. Logging in will return the student to the task they were working on. They may need to re-watch introductory or practice question videos, but their previous answers are saved.
Restart the computer or tablet
Students can skip any question in any subtest. They will see their skipped questions highlighted in yellow (unanswered) on the review page of the subtest. Before submitting their current subtest, students must answer all questions—they will not be able to proceed to the next subtest until the current one is complete. Encourage students to take their time and select the best possible answer as they progress through the assessment.
If students say this, remind them there are no repeated subtests. Subtests are divided into multiple sessions and structured the same way, starting with instructions, two practice questions, and the real test.
